DEFA-Production, 1986
The film describes the main stages of the artist Käthe Kollwitz from 1914 to 1945. 47 years old at the beginning of the First World War, Käthe Kollwitz is a well-known and appreciated artist. Her youngest son Peter volunteered as a soldier and fell just two weeks later. His death is probably the deepest break in her life. From now on they will never let go of the themes of mother and child, war and peace, life and death in their work. She lives with her husband, Karl Kollwitz, a doctor for the poor, in the Berlin working-class district of Prenzlauer Berg. The fate of the poor, whom she meets every day, preoccupies her throughout her life, and with her art she is committed to improving their living conditions.
